Public Activities of Catalan Jewish Women

Abstract: Although standards of modesty, custom, and law imposed limitations on the range of public activities of Jewish women, examples from the thirteenth-century Crown of Aragon show how, by the selective reliance on male relatives, and the use of agents, women were able to maneuver within those limitations, and sometimes to use them to their advantage.
