Monty Python and the Holy Grail

Released in 1975
Starring: Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin

Perhaps the most unique take on the legend of King Arthur, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is considered to be one of the funniest movies ever made. Written, produced, directed and starred in by the members of the British comedy troupe Monty Python, the film was made on a budget of just $350 000, but has earned over $127 million in revenues to date.

Plot: The film is a loose adaptation of the quest for the Holy Grail, with Graham Chapman playing the role of King Arthur – but the movie is filled with off-the-wall humour and crazy skits such as encounters with killer rabbits and three-headed knights who say “Ni!.”

The ongoing success of the film has lead to Eric Idle creating a Broadway play entitled Spamalot. Idle said in a recent interview, “If you’ve got a fantastic well, why not go back to it? Everybody loved the Holy Grail, with the Black Knight losing his arms and the imaginary horses. All musicals are basically adaptations from something else. It’s very rare for people to try to do an original.”

Famous Lines

“Please! This is supposed to be a happy occasion. Let’s not bicker and argue over who killed who.”- King of Swamp Castle

“I don’t want to talk to you no more, you empty headed animal food trough wiper. I fart in your general direction. Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.” – French Knight

“On second thought, let’s not go to Camelot. It is a silly place.” – King Arthur
